The importance of names

I recently had a conversation with a friend about how we name our cars. It seems to be a phenomenon more closely linked with older vehicles. Is this because they have more character? Why is it that we bestow personalities on machines?

My little old car is called Marvin. On the day I bought him my dad picked him up for me. Unfortunately by the time I got home the name had stuck and everyone refused to call him anything else. I succumbed to public opinion and bought a Marvin the Martian sun shade for him.

My sister's car is called Borris. Friends cars I have known include Alice (who was camel coloured), The Silver Snail, Leroy (who has a 'beer gut' according to his owner), Kermit, Wally, Ruby, Queen Mary and Dorothy. After being introduced recently to my sister's car a friend decided to name hers. Kath told me: 'I've called him Kel, 'cause every Kath needs a Kel. He's my "big hunk o' spunk!"'

Would anyone else like to share?

LOL! What a great question!

First named vehicle I can remember is the custom van my parents bought used from one of my aunts. It was giant, red, had red velvet plush walls and ceiling, gray shag carpet floors, a built in bar sink and fridge, and a couch that converted into a bed with bass speakers beneath it for extra vibration apparently. It even had red mood lighting! We named it The Sleaze Mobile.

My first car, a Chevette Scooter (aka overgrown roller skate) was named Bob in honor of my dual obsessions with The Cure and Church of the Subgenius.

My mom's car was this giant 1964 Chevy Impala. That one was named Bertha Big Butt.

Corey's recently deceased ugly truck was named "The Orange Destiny", a parody of the famous sword "Green Destiny" on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Currently we have Link the minivan, named after the Legend of Zelda video game character.

The Honda doesn't seem to have a name even though we've tried to make "Haku" stick. I mostly say "Go Go Gadget Honda" to it.

My Lovely Wife Allie has always named her cars, and we've kept the tradition going. Our curent is a burgundy Celica named Clarissa, after Doc Smith's Red Lensman - Clarissa's elegant but powerful -

Lovely! I've been wondering about why some cars are girls and some are boys, but all ships are girls ... I clearly need to make more use of my spare time!
